Money in the Word Episode 4: Hebrews 13:5

In this video, we take a look at Hebrews 13:5. This verse discusses that we should love God, not money, from Kiersten Whitsell, Paraplanner at Guide Financial Planning.

Hi, welcome to another episode of Money in the Word. My name is Kiersten Whitsell and I'm a paraplanner here at Guide Financial Planning. Our verse for today that we're going to go over is Hebrews 13:5. It says, "Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, 'Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.'" So today we're going to talk about loving God and not money.

Chapter 13 of Hebrews talks about other behaviors that are pleasing to God. It talks about loving others, hospitality, honoring marriage. And then lastly, it talks about contentment. So first we're going to talk about love. The definition of love is the object of attachment devotion or admiration. God wants us to make him our number one devotion. He didn't say don't have money, he said don't love money. Money is meant to be a tool and how you use the tool reveals what's in the heart of the person that's using it. For example, our phone, it's probably the one thing that we have on us almost 24/7. We can use this tool for good to say call your grandma and check in on her. Or, we can use it for bad and overuse it by constantly scrolling through social media and ignoring the people that we care about that are right there in front of us.

The Bible says you can't serve both God and money, so next we're going to talk about contentment. Thankfulness and gratitude often lead to contentment. Our perspective guides us to a place of thankfulness, and therefore contentment. Paul says in Philippians 4:11, "I've learned to be content in every circumstance." The key word here is "learned." Being content doesn't just happen when you have enough money, you get the fancy house and car you've always wanted. No, we have to be content no matter what, whether we have a little or a lot and really that's a learning process. It takes time and focus on what God has already provided to us and knowing that he will take care of us no matter what because he's already given us everything we need in Jesus.

Lastly, we're going to talk about the part that says, "I will never leave you or forsake you." This promise from God that he says he will never leave us or forsake us from the book of Hebrews is actually quoting the book of Deuteronomy 3:16. It's really the foundation for contentment. We can't count on material things but we can depend on God and his promise, and his promise is that he'll stand with us for both now and through all eternity. Isn't that so comforting?

To summarize, our devotion should be to the one true God who can we can take refuge in because he has promised us that he will be with us always and forever. So again, our verse Hebrews 13:5, "Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, 'Never will I leave you never will I forsake you.'"

Will you join me in this prayer? Lord, help keep my life free from the love of money, and be content with what you have provided me, and remember that you're always there for me, no matter what may come my way. Thank you.
